11-30-18 (20 Point Debate Blog)
Today in Human Geo, we had a debate and I went into with a blank mind, ready a learn. I learned some really interesting things that struck me the most was the Trump Immigration policy that would keep immigrants in Mexico instead being put in asylums and I really liked that. I think that one of the major problems is that the asylum system is from what i can tell in development so sometimes things go wrong. So of those examples are the splitting of parents and their kids, this could be saved if we make a agreement to let them stay in Mexico until the time for their case to be heard. I know its the best but its still a compromise, if your a immigrant from Mexico it just returns you to the problems but countries like Venezuela could benefit from it. As i can tell Venezuela faces a lot of problems and is a country crumpling to nothing. So Venezuelan immigrants could seek homage in Mexico until they can get into the USA. I also learned from the podcast that Trump stop allowing immigrants suffering of Gang Violence or Domestic Violence to be allowed in through Asylum. However it took me a little while. I can see both sides of the argument. On the spectrum of Gang Violence, if the person suffering from Gang Violence has or had Gang Affiliation how do we know they are safe enough to be allowed into the country? Especially if they were once apart of MS-13. But on the other side, aren't we supposed to be a beacon of hope for the suffering? The Country of Opportunity? With Domestic Violence many good points were made, especially one Belle made. She talked about how many of the cases made on the news today are for domestic violence and some are not legit? They are just people searching for fame or money through the successful? So why couldn't that be the case with Immigrants? Using domestic violence as a gateway to escape the problems they gave themselves in their native home? However, you can argue we are in a generation where women have a voice, and they are beginning to speak out and have the confidence to talk about sensitive topics such as domestic violence? Again the beacon of hope we are supposed to be needs to come into play. Last i think the point I made still sticks with me, after the podcast Mr. Schick asked if we thought if it was biased or who we thought made the podcast. I feel like it started out balance but they eventually stopped supporting Trump as much and were talking against his antics. This made me think, as a student getting older an older learning more and more about Politics....is the news a valid way of learning about Politics? The news is seemingly going so far right and left that its hard to find what is legit or not? The news gets altered to make it seem so much worse or better to just fit a certain side. So can we really trust what the news says about Trump and immigration? Because aren't witnessing first hand what is happening. Its just difficult for me to grasp and I hope we do more of this because i like learning and having a voice.

Colin, you really struck a chord with your classmates. Many of their blogs mentioned you - they think you were right on the money with your comments about the press. I was really glad to hear you speaking up, and I hope to hear more. I have to knock a few points off this blog grade, because you didn't address any of the Key Issues, as instructed. Otherwise, excellent work! 17/20
